The Why and What and How of INFOHEALTH
By William F. Brown
Professor of Neurology, McMaster University and NOTL resident
It has been the experience of many health care professionals that sometimes there is simply insufficient time or the resources one would like to provide all the information that needs to be given and which users of the health care system have a right to expect. INFOHEALTH is being launched in January 2008 as one means of closing the information gap for the community of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is a new collaborative program designed to provide timely, accurate information about health matters for residents in the area.
The program brings together representatives from the NOTL Family Health Team, the NOTL Public Library and local residents. The program will run throughout the year, beginning in January. Consisting of workshops and presentations at the Library on a monthly basis, the program will focus on how to achieve and maintain healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, the detection and management of specific diseases and how to navigate and ue the resources available to us in the Niagara health care system.
The year will be divided into 3 sessions: the first in the Winter/Spring of 2008; the second in the Summer and the last in the Fall. Each session will focus on the theme such as mental health, the prevention and management of vascular and heart diseases or cancer, children's, men's and women's health issues.
The objective of the program is to provide residents with up-to-date reliable information on a broad range of health-related subjects and will draw on the expertise of family physicians and specialists, nurse practitioners, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dentists and practitioners of alternatives medicine and others in the ever expanding world of medicine and health care.
Our intention is to provide the best information we can and make that information available both in hard copy form as well as by posting the same information and extended sources on the NOTL Public Library website. We hope to make the form and content of INFOHEALTH as relevant, reliable and user friendly as we can. We intend to monitor the program and make it as responsive to the needs of residents in the Niagara-on-the-Lake region as possible.
Mark the second Wednesday of the month in your calendar beginning January 9. You will have a choice of a presentation at 2pm or at 7pm. The same presentation will be given twice the same day. Call to reserve your seat at 905 468-2023 or send an email to library info@notl.org and tell us what date and time you will attend.
