Greetings to Niagara-on-the-Lake Residents!

My name is Greg Smith and I am honored to have been selected for the CEO position of Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library. Before my introduction I wish to compliment the community on building one of the most attractive public libraries that I have seen in my 18-year public library career. The exterior and interior architecture of the building provides an experience that is both inviting and stimulating for the pursuit of life-long learning, recreation, economic and cultural activities. I feel that this facility represents the commitment of Niagara-on-the-Lake citizens toward library services and community development.

I started my library career in 1990 after graduating from the University of Toronto with a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. My first library position was “Business Resources Librarian” at the Oakville Public library, delivering business reference services and seminars to the Oakville business community, in addition to regular reference service and electronic resource training to library staff. While working in Oakville I developed an interest in library computer systems and information technology, which led to my enrollment in a one year Niagara College program titled “Computer Network Operations.” After completing this program I started a new position as “System/Cataloguing Librarian” at the St. Catharines Public Library. In this position I managed the library’s computer catalogue database and software/hardware infrastructure, which included the Integrated Library System and all computer network and communication services. In 1999 I was promoted to my most recent position, Director of Systems & Technical Services, which manages all Integrated Library Systems, acquisition and processing activities. Throughout my library career I have been a member of the Ontario Library Association and just recently completed a three-year term as an elected councilor on the Ontario Library and Information Technology Association council. As CEO I will fully commit to efficient, effective and quality library service for the Niagara-on-the-Lake community, and while exercising this commitment I expect to utilize all of my skills and knowledge attained during my 18-year library career.

I look forward to my new role as CEO of Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library and wish to become acquainted with the staff and community as soon as possible. On that note I invite all Niagara-on-the- Lake citizens to visit the library, avail themselves of our library services, and meet me either on the public floor or in the office of the CEO. The door will always be open.

Best regards,

Greg Smith
Chief Executive Officer – Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library
